The 7 Best Books on Lifestyle Design

We live in a day in age where anything is possible. You decide what you want, figure out a way to pay for it, then go and do it!

It’s really that simple.

Nobody said you have to stay at a job doing something you don’t like.

But if you’re like me, and the idea of creating your own ideal lifestyle doesn’t come naturally, I’ve made up this little book list as a starting point.

Below are 7 of my favorite books on lifestyle design.

While they may not be directly related to “living on a tropical island”, they all relate to taking control of your own life, money, entrepreneurship, and everything else that goes into doing the thing.

You’ll also notice most of them are not all “rah-rah you-can-do-it” Tony Robbins style. Most of them give you the actual nuts and bolts you need to get started.

Now for the list…

The 4 Hour Workweek

Four Hour Workweek Tim Ferriss is the Godfather of lifestyle design. I picked this book up at Costco almost 7 years ago. It blew my mind.

It took me a few years to actually get it and apply it but I’m so glad I did. I can honestly say I’m where I’m at today because of this book.

If you’re looking to get a solid understanding of what all these “lifestyle designers” are talking about, The Four Hour Workweek is the best place to start.

The Millionaire Fastlane

The Millionaire FastlaneA buddy of mine handed me this book a while back and said “this is by far the best book I’ve ever read on money and business”.

MJ DeMarco self published this amazing book and I’ve since tossed any other business/money/investing books out the window. Really.

This book is amazingly underrated but those who’ve read it, get it.

This book will help you get into the right mindset regarding money and get into the right business to achieve your goals.

Making the Jump into Small Business Ownership

Making the JumpThis is a great book about entrepreneurship and getting started in business.

But wait? Why entrepreneurship and not lifestyle design? Because to start your own business, provide for yourself, and create your ideal lifestyle IS entrepreneurship.

This book does a great job of helping you understand the principles you need to know.

Plus, I have a slight bias on this book because the author is an old high school buddy of mine. I can honestly say David Nilssen is the most successful guy I know from my graduating class. This guy walks the walk.

The E-Myth Revisited

The E-MythIf you’re thinking about starting your own business (which you have to in order to be in full control of your life), then you need to read this book. Michael Gerber helps you identify your mindset when it comes to how you work.

He also helps you understand how to set your business up as a system from the get-go. By reading this book at the beginning, you’ll save yourself a TON of time and frustration in trying to do everything yourself.

The goal of a lifestyle business is to get yourself on top of it as quickly as possible. It’s very achievable. This book will show you how.

Virtual Freedom

Virtual FreedomI’m cheating on this one. I haven’t read the book yet. In fact, it just launched this week. But I’ve followed the author Chris Ducker for sometime on his blog and he’s the real deal. He’s a genuinely nice guy that knows his stuff when it comes to outsourcing.

In fact, I’ve used his service Virtual Staff Finder to find employees for my own business.

If you’re hoping to have a lifestyle business that allows you the time to do what you want to do, then hands down no matter what, you need to create a team. There’s no better way to do so than to outsource to high quality professionals abroad. The world is flat. You might as well capitalize on it!

The $100 Start Up

The $100 StartupThis is a great book to learn how to create your first business. The author, Chris Guillebeau, talks about how to combine what you love with the market. In other words, it’s OK to start a business based on your passion, so long as there’s a market for it.

I met Chris one time while in Seattle. He’s a down to earth guy that presents info in an easy to understand way.

This book is full of inspirational examples as well as the steps on how to actually do everything.

The Science of Getting Rich

The Science of Getting RichThis book may not look like it belongs but it does. Creating money is a mindset. You have to have the right mindset to start your own business and then do whatever you want to do.

A big part of this book is “thinking in the certain way”. It’s certainly much more “mental” but still very much how-to in what steps you should take to make positive changes.

This book was written a long time ago but I promise it will help you as you start to take control of your own finances and start living the dream.

*Bonus Book*

Ok, one more!

The Alchemist

The AlchemistI had to include this book because it’s so inspirational! It’s told in a story format and you can read it in about 2 hours.

Check it out and start living your own legend!

**

I hope you enjoy the books on this list as much as I do. More importantly, I hope they help guide you to living the dream!

What other books would you recommend?
